After seeing various film and TV adaptations of the hacker-turned-private-investigator, Amazon Studios is developing a new standalone series focused on Lisbeth Salander from Stieg Larsson’s Millennium novel franchise, according to Variety.

The series, which is currently entitled The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo off of the first book in the franchise, is said to neither be a sequel or continuation of the character’s story from the books or films but rather a more contemporary story with Lisbeth in a new setting and working alongside new characters.

No writer or actress is yet signed on to the in-development project, but Andy Harries, founder and CEO of Left Bank Pictures, has signed on to executive produce alongside Rob Bullock, while Amazon Studios will produce in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Harries has been attached to a number of high-profile projects on the small screen over the years, including the upcoming AMC miniseries Quiz, the Netflix royal drama The Crown, the Cinemax espionage actioner Strike Back and Starz’s fantasy romance Outlander.

First introduced in Larsson’s 2005 novel, which was followed by two sequels penned by the Swedish author before his untimely death, Salander is the primary character of the Millennium novel franchise and is a computer hacker with a traumatic past who finds herself frequently wrapped up in dark and shocking mysteries spanning across Europe. She made her first onscreen performance in the 2009 Swedish adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo portrayed by Noomi Rapace (Bright), who would continue the role in two sequels, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

Rapace would be succeeded in the role in 2011 in the American adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, in which Rooney Mara (Mary Magdalene) took over the role and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. After languishing in development hell for years, Sony Pictures chose to move forward on a soft reboot with Claire Foy (The Crown) taking over the role in 2018’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web, based on one of the novels not penned by Larsson, which received mixed to generally negative reviews and was a box office failure.
