Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 5 Recap

In the previous episode of Netflix’s Designated Survivor, Hannah and Dr. Mays realized that the virus development was motivated by eugenics. In Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 5, a vile news article about Kirkman’s wife made the rounds before the first debate.

No Oxygen

Kirkman consoled Penny after she read an article on the internet. It accused Kirkman of arranging Alex’s death because she was a Russian spy. Seth wanted him to address it and tell the people how he really felt about it. Kirkman didn’t want any response to it. Unfortunately, during Seth’s press briefing, all anyone would ask him about was the article. Seth snapped and ranted about how disgusting it was.

Pardon

Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 5 Recap

Harper wanted a short list from Isabel for potential pardons. Isabel included Miguel Salcedo, who’d been sentenced to 70 years in jail for his words inciting an act of terrorism. It was a free speech issue but would be unpopular because people had died. Lorraine asked Aaron to talk her down, and when he tried, Isabel called him out. Aaron argued that his work was more important, and she refused to attend the debate with him.

During the debate, Kirkman tied the inciting news story with his Miguel Salcedo pardon and highlighted the importance of free speech. By Lorraine’s estimation, he had won the debate. She had paid for the article to be written and witnessed Emily leaving Aaron’s hotel room after they’d slept together. When Aaron got home, he apologized for what he said to Isabel but didn’t come clean about cheating on her.

The Truth

Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 5 Recap

Carrie, Emily’s mother, called her from a hospital bed. She told Emily that she had a blood clot. Emily would be in town for the debate, so Carrie wanted her to visit. When Emily got there, she realized that it was much worse than a blood clot. Carrie’s cancer had spread, and she had stopped treatment. She didn’t want Emily to stop working.

Harper’s mistress wanted him to leave his wife. He reminded her that he had never promised that; he’d been very clear from the start. When he got home, Lynn wanted to be intimate for the first time in a while. Unfortunately, after having just had sex with his mistress, he couldn’t. She questioned if he still found her attractive. At the end of the episode, Harper found Lynn on the floor. She had overdosed.

Dontae revealed to his boyfriend, Troy, that he was HIV positive but undetectable. Troy felt betrayed, but Dontae insisted that he was safer to have sex with than most.

Conspiracy

Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 5 Recap

Hannah had tracked down Crawford, the man who had infected the pregnant women at the Toronto clinic. She spotted him on security footage outside of the Tampa apartment. Despite being CIA, Hannah had taken her gun with her as she and Eli broke into his place. Crawford came upon them and told them that what he was doing was bigger than they thought. When he came toward her, she shot him dead. He had an “88” tattoo on his wrist that stood for “Heil, Hitler”. He was a white supremacist.
