Hulu renews Pen15 and Ramy for second seasons
The future’s looking bright for Hulu’s original series. Along with the announcements of several new and returning series, the streaming platform has ordered second seasons of its comedies PEN15 and Ramy.
PEN15 stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle will to return for a 14-episode second season of adult comedy, and Ramy has been picked up for a 10-episode second season. The series was created by and stars Erskine and Konkle and Sam Zvibleman. Erskine and Konkle play 13-year-old versions of themselves as they forage through the daily terror of middle school in the year 2000.
Hulu has described the show as “middle school as it really happened. Erskine and Konkle play versions of themselves as 13-year-old outcasts in the year 2000, surrounded by actual 13-year-olds, where the best day of your life can turn into your worst with the stroke of a gel pen.“
The series is executive produced by Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone. The trio is better known as the comedy group The Lonely Island, who produced 2016’s Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping. Becky Sloviter, Marc Provissiero, Brooke Pobjoy, Debbie Liebling, and Gabe Liedman also serve as executive producers.
Ramy was co-created by star Ramy Youssef along with Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch, and follows a first generation Egyptian-American who is on a spiritual journey in his politically-divided New Jersey neighborhood. The series looks to bring a new perspective to the screen as it explores the challenges of what it’s like being caught between a Muslim community that thinks life is a moral test and a millennial generation that thinks life has no consequences.
Youssef stars alongside Mohammed Amer (Crashing), Hiam Abbass (Blade Runner 2049), Amr Waked (Lucy), May Calamawy (The Long Road Home), Dave Merheje (We Are Disorderly), Laith Nakli (24: Legacy) and Steve Way. Ramy is executive produced by Jerrod Carmichael (The Carmichael Show), Ravi Nandan from A24, showrunner Bridget Bedard, Katcher and Welch.
Both acclaimed comedies will be returning for round two
